Idomeni was the largest refugee camp in contemporary Greece: a vast expanse of tents along the railway at the border with Macedonia. Approximately 12,000 people lived here, with 40% being minors, many of them unaccompanied. Among the camp residents were around six hundred pregnant women, according to Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF). Originally established as a transit settlement for Syrian, Afghan, Yazidi, Iraqi, Pakistani, and Kurdish refugees attempting to reach Northern Europe, the Idomeni camp eventually evolved into a permanent settlement.
